The Season of Comfort And Joy?

IMG 6908 Midlife and BeyondThe Christmas season is upon us!  But, first, what interests you when you’re flicking through blogs, Instagram, Pinterest, etc..…..? Recently, I was scrolling through YouTube, and after watching the classic movie clip from The Godfather: Part 2, “My Offer is Nothing,” I came across a light-hearted video of Alexa Chung collaborating with Mango.

The Godfather 2 Al PacinoAlexa said, “You, know best, so trust your instincts”. I agree, we all have a basic idea of our style, whatever that is. What we wear is a true reflection of who we are. It’s an opportunity to represent our personalities. How boring would it be if we all dressed, similarly? And, does it matter if we are dressing in a way which may not suit everyone’s ideal? As Alexa says in the video, “it doesn’t matter”.

I enjoy the challenge of putting an outfit together. Sometimes, it works, sometimes not. But, it’s fun, experimenting. My appreciation and love of clothes goes on. I love the joy of something I’ve chosen to wear working perfectly for me – making me feel good and lifting my mood. I also enjoy seeing how others put an outfit together, using their flair and individuality. It’s not all about buying new stuff but spending time figuring out what works. The key component is feeling relaxed and comfortable as well as chic, of course.

So, what to wear, now, in a laid-back, not trying too hard way…..?  I use this time of year as an opportunity to be more adventurous and maybe a little daring, especially blending different fabrics and textures.

Gibson Les Paul. Pat McMahon We are not the types to attend super posh do’s at Christmas, just a few get-togethers with close friends and family.  We do have two planned music shows, organised by my other half, Pat.  If you are a regular, here, you will know Pat is a musician.  He arranges a regular gig in the summer months and one at Christmas. But, this year, the Christmas gig sold out, immediately. So, he has added another date. So, we have two, this year.  They are at the Peacock in Sunderland (upstairs auditorium).  This is an event where people of all ages can go, to listen to good music and let their hair down.  Alongside his band, “Blue Diamond” he has other musicians guesting. The shows have become quite a thing. We are now in our fourth year – not only is it a great night but it’s a chance to see friends from long ago and meet new ones. So, it’s become a sort of reunion opportunity, which makes it extra special.

The Season of Comfort And Joy? christmas post from Midlife and BeyondIn today’s post, I am sharing some outfit ideas which you may find useful, not only now but in the months ahead.  Sequins and shimmer are now worn throughout the year, which is great.  It’s a shame for this uplifting sparkle to sit in our wardrobes gathering dust.  I didn’t wear sequins at all up until a few years ago.  The few pieces I now own will be the last unless bought from pre-loved websites.  I bought the pink midi from eBay (pre-loved).  The reason is that Sequins are harmful to the environment.  They are made from petroleum-based plastics and synthetic materials which are not biodegradable.

The Season of Comfort And Joy? christmas post from Midlife and Beyond The Season of Comfort And Joy? christmas post from Midlife and Beyond The run-up to Christmas can be a joy or a “pain in the neck” depending on your circumstances.  It’s a time for reflection, remembering Christmases gone by and loved ones who are sadly missing from the table, making this time bittersweet for most.  I hope you have a truly wonderful, peaceful time whichever way you’re spending it.  A4D5A3CD 2A05 4B64 BFD0 E78E730A087C Midlife and BeyondApart from the two music shows, we will be having a laid-back affair, “comfies” on with a few festive treats, watching films I have been meaning to watch alongside my quirky taste in TV…“Squid Game, Series 2” begins on Boxing Day, so I’m very excited to watch that. A good recommendation for you is, “The Day of the Jackal”, starring Eddy Redmayne.  We have just watched the last episode and it’s a “must-watch!”

  1. Merry Christmas, Alison! We had all the kids and grands over so a bit of a full house, but that’s really only 10. It was a good day, but I do miss getting together with my brother and sister. It’s a far trek so we haven’t done it for several years now.

I love your sequined outfits. I finally broke down and bought a sequin skirt. It’s a classic black maxi so it will be in my closet for years. I knew sequins were bad for the environment, but I didn’t know why. Thanks for the info.

I hope your husband’s shows go wonderfully…they sound like a fun time for everyone! We will be at home as my husband still struggles with walking. Hopefully, next Christmas will be a different story.

  2. Thank you, Marsha. I hope you have had a lovely Christmas and new with your family. Unfortunately, I’ve had the flu, which resulted in a chest infection – hence, I haven’t been out at all. What a pain it is to be poorly, on the mend now thank goodness. xx
