A Three Year Update on my “CO2″ Fully Ablative Laser Treatment

IMG 0448 Midlife and BeyondIt has been three years since I had the “CO2 Fully Ablative” laser treatment, carried out by Kliniken, in Harrogate, North Yorkshire. As this treatment promises incremental improvements, have there been any notable ones?

Here’s an update.

Observing my skin, now, I have to take into account that I have aged more. And, although I’m a stickler for SPF 50 and follow a very good skincare routine, I have the usual wrinkles and droopiness for a person of my age. I have never tried Botox or fillers, yet. The cost is probably the reason, but, you should never say, “never”.

My lines show I have had a life in my 65 years and I’m lucky enough to still be around, which I am thankful for. I never desired that tight, shiny, “blasted in a wind tunnel” look, – just an improved, healthy, subtle result.

IMG 1657 Midlife and BeyondI come from a generation that lay and “frazzled” in the sun for hours and I have photographs of my younger self, looking sunburnt rather than sun-kissed. Since my mid-forties, I have generally kept out of the sun and worn SPF50, consistently.

Before the treatment, I did tons of research as well as discussing the intricacies of the procedure with the very approachable and friendly Mallappa Kolar – a respected Consultant Plastic Surgeon with 20 years of experience. This was key to going ahead with the procedure.

My main aim was to improve the look of my skin. And, even though attitudes towards cosmetic surgery have become more relaxed and accepted, I remember still feeling a little vain before the treatment.  But then I thought, why not? Ageing brings acceptance in lots of ways, which allows us to be more comfortable in our own skin.  I have always enjoyed exploring the beauty world for new skincare and makeup – this doesn’t end in midlife.

Because of the sun damage I had done to my face, I had already explored laser treatments and their capabilities. And, I came to realise the CO2 Ablative laser treatment would be effective but wasn’t for the faint-hearted. The procedure itself wouldn’t resemble a relaxed “hydra facial” while zoning out to the sound of gentle waves. I was sure that I didn’t want the outcome to make me look windswept, either – just a subtle improvement to the texture of my skin.

I followed the healing process guidelines, precisely, and the redness and swelling began to subside after a week, showing improvements which are still there, today.

I understood from my consultations that the awakening of collagen would be a gradual process over the years to come, so I didn’t expect anything immediate.

IMG 1804 Midlife and BeyondSince then, I have received compliments from people on the condition of my skin, asking which products I use. I don’t have any age spots on my face, which could also be due to the Tretinoin (Retin A) cream I have used, for years.

Tretinoin (Retin-A) is now available on Amazon.

If you are thinking about having any procedure, do your homework, thoroughly. Thankfully, the UK government are tightening regulations regarding cosmetic procedures. This is to cut down on “cowboy practitioners”, which we hear about in the news, every day.

The new regulations will include licensing requirements and restrictions on who performs procedures along with rigorous standards. There will also be age restrictions on under-18s.

IMG 1667gmp 2 Midlife and BeyondMallappa had lots of reviews and testimonials from happy, satisfied patients, so I was confident that I was in safe hands.

  1. I think your skin is amazing! I have had several laser treatments, but I’ve been too chicken to go for the really intense ones. I’ve also done Botox (rather a version of it) and liked the results. I just keep forgetting to schedule another appointment. I do get monthly hydrafacials and love them. I also wear a high spf but don’t put it on in the morning to take the dog out. I can definitely tell because my face is tanner than usual. But, my goodness, your hair is splendid, Alison!! I haven’t had long hair in years because it’s quite thin and not as gorgeously thick as yours!

    • Thank you, Marsha. The laser treatment was effective – I’m still seeing improvements in the texture of my skin, but I don’t think I’d do it again, preferring a gentler option. I am curious about Botox, but it’s a little bit pricey, and, yes a high SPF is what I use whatever I’m doing in my day. I’ve found a lovely creamy one (good old Nivea) which is cheap and effective….and, doesn’t leave that white residue.

Thanks for sharing an update, we dont often hear about how treatments worked out 2-3 years later. Your skin always looks good, a lovely colour and texture. I’m interested in treatments that stimulate collagen production. I’d love to get rid of my pigmentation patches. but I believe they come back unless you hide from the sun altogether.

    • I’m pleased I had the laser treatment as I’ve found it to show ongoing improvements, but I’m not sure if I would do it again. A high SPF is my must have.
