What to Watch On TV?  A Few More Suggestions

Here are some shows which we have watched and enjoyed, recently.  Hopefully, there is one or two you haven’t seen yet and fancy watching.  Again, I’ve tried my best not to give any details of the plot away – just my take on what I thought of the show. If you have any suggestions of your own, let me know in the comments – I would love to hear them!

It’s a Sin – TV mini-series (all episodes available on channel 4 – five, in total)

Plot

A chronicle of four friends during a decade in which everything changed, including the rise of AIDS.  This series has been viewed over 6.5 million times and has broken records for Channel 4.

Review

We started to watch this series following an interview we had seen with the show’s writer, Russell T Davies.  This is a joyful, devastating, sincere human story.  It taught me more about the HIV/AIDS crisis and the lives of the LGBTQ+ community.  You will laugh, cry and everything in between.  I fell in love with the characters.  Fantastic portrayal and a must see!

Prisoners – Film 2013 Amazon Prime

Plot

When Keller Dover’s (Hugh Jackman) daughter and her friend go missing, the police (Jake Gyllenhaal) pursue multiple leads while the pressure mounts to find them.

Review

Prisoners is a gritty, incredibly well-acted, suspenseful, and thought-provoking thriller. The film mainly focuses on the choices taken and the consequences faced by the characters.  The suspense never lets up and keeps you captivated until the end credits.

Ratched – TV Series (Netflix)

Plot

In 1947, Mildred Ratched begins working as a nurse at a leading psychiatric hospital. But beneath her stylish exterior, lurks growing darkness.

Review

I had no expectations before stumbling across this series on Netflix. This is because I am a huge fan of Sarah Poulson and loved her portrayal of Marcia Clark in “American Crime Story: The People vs OJ Simpson”, which pulled me in to begin watching. In this series, she delivers a great performance. The costumes and sets are amazing and were a joy to watch.

The Crown – TV Series started in 2016 (Netflix)

Plot

This series follows the political rivalries and romance of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign and the events that shaped the second half of the twentieth century.

Review

I am not usually interested in the Royal family and prior to watching had misgivings about this series, hearing in the media that there may be inaccuracies.  But I was curious to give it a try following the great reviews it was receiving as well as friends who were also raving about it.  From the moment I started to watch, I realised how outstanding it is in every way – simply, faultless. From brilliant dramatisation, acting, score to cinematography, everywhere you look, it commands. The historical significance is stunning – which I enjoyed most of all.  I cannot wait for the next instalment.

The Fall – TV Series ITV – (The ITV Hub and Netflix)

Plot

A seemingly cold but very passionate policewoman (Gillian Anderson) goes head-to-head with a seemingly passionate father (Jamie Dornan) who is, in fact, a cold serial killer.

Review

“The Fall” is set in Belfast and is very well filmed. It has a strong developing storyline, centred around real people with real issues. The main character is portrayed as disturbed and dark.

Unbelievable Netflix Mini-Series (Netflix)

Plot

Based on the true story of Marie, a teenager who was charged with lying about having been raped, and the two female detectives who followed the path to the truth.

Review

This was very well scripted, produced and directed and some stellar performances, throughout. I was hooked from the first episode. I especially loved the two lead detective roles played by Toni Collette and Merritt Wever who play strong women doing their job well. A must watch.

Little Fires Everywhere – TV Series (Amazon Prime video)

Plot

This series is based on Celeste Ng’s 2017 bestseller, which follows the intertwined fates of the picture-perfect Richardson family and the enigmatic mother and daughter who upend their lives.

Review

Since watching this, I have heard that most people who have read the book then watched this series, were disappointed.

I haven’t read the book and did find the show a little bit cliched at times, and predictable. It has a great cast. Reese Witherspoon plays the “soccer mom” to perfection. It’s not one of the best shows I have watched.

The Morning Show. TV Series (Apple TV)

Plot

An inside look at the modern workplace through the lens of the people who help America wake up. It pulls back the curtain and shows us the unique challenges faced by the men and women who carry out this daily televised ritual.

Review

This show captured my attention from the start. I thought Jenifer Aniston & Steve Carrell have a great on-screen relationship, and praise to the writers for their delicate approach to the social issues in the storyline. Straightaway, I was interested in the other characters and found them to be both likeable and relatable. The script, direction and photography are amazing. I also love the opening track and the visuals that go with it – so have downloaded it onto my music list.

I need to see The Fall, just love Gilian. I think i’m about the only person who didn’t watch The Crown. I also don’t have Netflix, lol.

    • I’m a big fan of Gillian too! She was amazing as Mrs Thatcher in “The Crown”. x

I loved Little Fires Everywhere too. I wasn’t too sure about The Morning Show but after reading your review it’s moved up on my list to watch 🙂

    • I read the other day that there are rumours of a second series of LFE, not sure if that will happen though. I do love Reece W and Jennifer A, so for that reason I gave “The Morning Show” a try. JA wore some beautiful clothes in it. Hope you enjoy it! xx

I absolutely loved It’s A Sin and I can’t wait for the next series of The Crown Alison. ‘m also very excited that Sex And The City is making a comeback! I’ve just watched Behind Her Eyes on Netflix. A very weird story but one that you can’t stop watching

    • I agree “it’s a sin” is a must watch for many reasons. I’m a massive fan
of “The Crown”. I love the actress who is playing Diana in the next
instalment – there may be quite a wait for that. I’ll definitely check
your suggestion out as we’re looking for something new to watch. x

    • Me too! I didn’t realise he was a musician too until after I’d watched
the series. Super talented and so charismatic.

Some great recommendations- we loved The Morning Show, The Fall and Unbelievable. Will check out Prisoners. Thanks for sharing at #WowOnWednesday Alison

    • Some of the outfits Jennifer Aniston wears in the morning show are stunning. Worth
      a watch for that alone.xx

  5. I watched Unbelievable a few months ago. It was so good! Such insight into the automatic stereotypes we make about people based on their living situation and past. It’s sad.

    • I agree Laura. This was such a hard hitting story. I think you’ll agree we were with the main character every step of the way on her journey – great portrayal.

    • Thank you. Pleased you enjoyed the read through – I hope you found something you would like to watch.

  6. It’s a Sin looks really interesting! I loved Little Fires Everywhere. I started watching The Crown a while back and loved it but sort of fell off of it. I need to revisit that one. I love your wide legged corduroy pants! The whole outfit is adorable. Thanks for linking with me!

    • Thank you, Shelbee, I’ve had these corded pants for a few years now, not a lot of opportunities to wear them lately. “It’s a sin”, was not only a great watch but an educational watch too. I loved the characters and wanted to be in their gang. There’s some great series out there, it’s finding them that can be tricky. xx

  7. I am definitely watching Ratched. Oh yes! I love Sarah Paulson!

    • Me too! I’m a huge fan of hers. Hope you enjoy it, I really loved it. xx

I was one of those that read the book and was disappointed in the show Little Fires Everywhere; though truth be told I didn’t love the book either.

    • Oh no! I usually give up when I’m not enjoying reading something. I found this series to be hard work but did stick
with it hoping it would improve, sadly it wasn’t my thing.

I absolutely loved The Crown, it’s been one of my all-time favourites. That and Downton Abbey which I adored and was gutted when it came to an end. I have seen none of the others you mentioned, although some of them certainly sounds intriguing!
    Suzy x

    • Suzy, The Crown and Downtown Abby are my favourites too! Pure escapism when watching these two. It’s awful when they come to an end. There is talk of another Downton film – I do hope they do it. Think I need to get out more – when we can of course.😖Enjoy your Sunday. x
