Outerwear: Styling My New Waxed Barbour Jacket.

I couldn’t believe my luck when Barbour contacted me on Instagram to say I had won a competition.  The Barbour team explained that a photograph that I had shared on Instagram wearing one of their jackets had acquired quite a few views, hence winning this competition. They explained that I could choose an item from their website up to the value of £250.00. After the shock of this lovely surprise sinking in, I decided to check out their waxed jacket selection. It is such a long time since I have owned one in that style so I knew this was going to be my choice.

The first one I owned was in my twenties. It was a boxy style and I wore it until it fell to pieces.  Barbour was founded in 1845 and has been creating the timeless wax style jackets and outwear for which it is best known since 1910.   Since then, very little about this design has changed. A few minor tweaks, here and there on the style, but at its heart, everything remains true to the original design – especially the great quality of workmanship along with comfort and functionality.

For me, this is what makes this jacket so iconic. It has an illustrious fan base, not only here but throughout the world. As well as being very “on-trend”, Barbour is, of course, also associated with the upper class and royalty.  This “oh-so British” brand is just as popular, today, as it ever was. The Alexa Chung collaboration has brought a blend of nostalgia and fashion-forward thinking.

The likes of Megan Markle, Kate Middleton and many more wear the waxed jacket and various other styles.  If you are looking for a quilted style of Barbour, I have written about it, here

Before ordering my jacket, I wanted to go into one of their shops or a retail outlet that sells Barbour such as John Lewis to have a good old “try on”. I’m lucky because Barbour have a large shop in the Northeast, so I tried a lot of jackets on.

As this will be a forever piece, I wanted to get the style, size and length right. I was after a slightly oversized and slouchy look. I am between a size twelve and fourteen so I sized up to give me room to wear a jumper, underneath. The style I loved and settled on is the “Beadnell” in the colour, sage. I also got the hood which shows off the lovely tartan and finishes the jacket off to perfection. I feel that this jacket is an upgrade to my wardrobe and I’m not only wearing a quality piece of clothing but something traditional, practical and, most importantly, weatherproof……. very important where I live, plus, I’m too old to be cold.

As you can see in the photographs, this jacket never goes out of style. It’s a classic which can be worn throughout the year with pretty much anything and just as “on trend” now as it ever was. This is a staple item in anyone’s wardrobe. My husband and children all have a Barbour jacket.

They are a little on the pricey side but will last forever if you take care of them. It’s a garment to cherish. I noticed, when visiting their shop in the Northeast, that they offer a service that allows their customers to return their Barbour jacket at any time to be re-waxed, cleaned, repaired or altered. Barbour recommends that you re-wax your jacket annually depending on wear.

Notes

I won my Barbour waxed Jacket and hood so was under no obligation to write about it.
