Leather Trousers, Why Not?

Mint Velvet leather trousers and Blazer

The consensus is leather trousers can be worn at any age.

I have been on the lookout for a pair of soft, stylish leather trousers for ages. I already own a pair of faux leather leggings and have posted pics on Instagram wearing them.

Following this, I received a few comments saying “at a certain age”, I would be nervous going anywhere near leather trousers.

Reading these comments made me feel quite sad. There are no rules or stipulations on what we should and should not wear at any age. Whatever your fancy, style wise, you should “wear it well” and own it, especially if it makes you feel good.

This quote came to mind, “Age doesn’t matter unless it matters to you”. This quote has stuck with me. Leather and suede trousers are so chic and I believe there’s a pair for everyone. Get the style right and they look great – worn with an oversize white crisp shirt, bangles, heels, flats, and accessories. Leather pants look great whether you’re petite, curvy, tall, or just plain nervous! There really are so many styles to choose from. It’s simply a case of keep “trying on” until you find the right ones for you. They are such great style/investment piece.

My very, very old pair of leather trousers – size 8-10, too snug to wear now unfortunately.

I bought my first pair of leather trousers when I was in my twenties (see pic below) – I still have them! They were bought from the local leather shop in Sunderland a long, long time ago. I am unable to tell you the make as the writing has worn off the label. They certainly are vintage. Call me nostalgic but, whenever I have a clear out of my wardrobe and come across these pants, I’m unable to part with them. Instead, I’m transported back to loved ones who were still around, and my life back then. So, I may never part with them. The style is quite current, but unfortunately, they are on the snug side!

My faux leather leggings from Zara

Since then, I have owned a few pairs of both faux and real leather trousers. Some much loved pairs have gone by the wayside (probably worn to death). I’ll also mention I have been vegetarian for a long while, but not vegan, so I do wear leather.

In the past, leather trousers were associated with heavy metal rockers, then punk. But, around 2010, I started to see leather/pleather and faux trousers on the catwalks and in the high street, which, of course, hasn’t gone away.

Similar on offer and some ideas

Zara faux leather leggings

My latest pair of faux leather leggings, which are a few years old, are from Zara. I did size up as I didn’t want the “spray on” look – which isn’t my style. I have worn these leggings a lot, they are so comfortable.

leather trousers from Mint Velvet – were £199 – then £99.00 in the sale.

So, onto my current quest to find the perfect pair. The high street is well known for having amazing faux leather styles and colours as well as great value real leather pieces in rich browns and cream. So, I started there!

I tried on quite a few pairs but they didn’t fit me well – and were either poor leather or the style wasn’t right for me. I immediately dismissed those with shiny looking leather – I wasn’t keen on them.

The choice is huge and I did get a little bamboozled, so, be armed with your tick list of what you’re looking for.

Real leather is an investment piece and can be a costly mistake if you buy the wrong ones. So, if you fancy a pair, get all your requirements right.

My wish list is: a slight bagginess which I know, from trouser/jeans styles I own, can be flattering to my shape; preferably straight legged which would sit on the ankle; not too tight but hugging my shape in all of the right places.

They have to be soft buttery leather and (so important) must be super comfortable.

The idea is to be able to dress them up in heels and a slinky blouse – or, alternatively, dressed down in a pair of flats for a more casual look.

As you can see, this is a large wish list which is why it’s taken me so long to find the perfect pair.  My favourites, and the ones I’ve fallen in love with, are these black leather, straight legged, slightly cropped trousers by Mint Velvet. The length is flattering, sitting on the ankle. They ticked all the boxes for me. The leather is butter-soft and they are a classic style, – an investment piece which I know I’ll wear a lot.

They are everything I was looking for in a real leather trouser. Leather trousers are investment pieces. They’re certainly not cheap and some of the pairs I have looked at over this journey were very expensive. I was so lucky as the original price for these were £199.00. I managed to buy them for £99.00 in the sale.

I have faux leather and faux suede trousers and leggings. As you said, they can be dressed up with heels or casual with flats. Looks very chic with a blazer!

What a brilliant price for butter soft leather. They will work well for years. I’ve never had anything in leather except a jacket years ago, so this is really something I should explore!

    • I was extremely lucky to get them for half price. They are beautiful quality so will last a
      long time to come. xx

  3. I do not have any leather trousers or leggings because I don’t think they really fit my life style but I do like how they look on others. I do like that yours are not sparyed on as you said which I think gives them more versatility!

    • I agree, we wear clothes to suit our lifestyle. I’m hoping in the months to come I’ll get the chance
to wear them more. They’ll also be great in the colder weather. xx

    • Thank you Emma. There really are no rules – in fact if I heard a statement like that I’d probably rebel, just for the hell of it. xx

    • They really are. It did take me a little while to find the right pair to suit. There’s not a lot of opportunities to wear them at the moment unfortunately. xx

  5. Right I’m off to check out the Mint Velvet site! Love the trousers so thanks for sharing on the #linkup party. Jacqui x

    • Thank you Jacque. I don’t think there’s any left in stock with MV, but there’s a pair in a very similar style with Sosandar. xx

  6. These trousers are fabulous and you are wearing them so well! I totally ignore all that “certain age” stuff. I think I paid attention to it for maybe one year when I was about 35. Haha. I also got my first pair of leather trousers in my 20’s. Oh, how I loved those pants. They made me feel super sexy. Now you are making me want to get another pair a few sizes bigger…because 20 years! Ha. Thanks for linking up with me and keep rocking your sassy looks!

  7. Alison, you look fantastic in these leather trousers! And wow, what a great sale price! I can’t believe some people base what they do or do not do on age. You’re right, it is sad.

You can definitely tell the difference between faux and real Alison. I only have faux but I do intend on buying a pair for winter 20/20 I’ve already been looking but not yet found the right pair. A huge difference I notice is that yours are not skin tight (skinnys) And I think this looks far more stylish xx

    • I think I tried every available pair on the high street. The leather is so soft and lovely quality – eventually, when our country opens up again I know I’ll wear them a lot.xx

These leather pants are so stylish! I love how you’ve styled them in all of these looks, but my favorite outfit is probably the one with the leopard/dotted blouse. I agree, you should be able to wear leather pants at any age!

  11. Those leather trousers look wonderful on you! I do think they look sharp and are a great investment piece. I love that you have memories and that is what is great about fashion also, tinking about where you wore them the event. etc. I love the look with the blouse and the blazer is quite sharp as well. I only have faux leather pants but have eyed the leather trouser. You look wonderful!
