“Florals… For Spring? Groundbreaking.”

“Florals… For Spring? Groundbreaking.”

This is one of my favourite quotes from the terrifying Miranda Priestly in “The Devil Wears Prada” (think we’ve all met people with various traits of Miranda in our lives -I know I have)!

I think we all agree that wearing florals for spring isn’t revolutionary. But, some of us return to various versions, year on year, because they look so vibrant following the “darks” of winter wear. They generate so much-needed optimism for the warmer months, ahead. I always hope spring will surprise us by appearing earlier than expected!

Of course, floral prints don’t float everyone’s boat– some are perhaps turned off by the twee associations of a “ditsy” print. Since beginning my blog journey, three years ago, I have become much more adventurous (prints-wise). I like to see bolder prints and florals and have become more interested in textile studying designers such as Celia Birtwell and Zandra Rhodes as well as others.

So, if you were to look inside my wardrobe, now, you will see a small outbreak of pattern alongside my favourite hard-working neutrals which I love to mix and match.

In today’s post, I am showing you three examples of how I am styling a few floral prints from my wardrobe. The first is this top which I spotted last summer in Zara. I bought it in the winter sale with a gift voucher I had received for Christmas.

I guessed it was a dress but thought how good it would look as a top. Wearing a floral blouse is a great way to be introduced to a low-key print if you are not used to wearing florals. I loved the ruffled design and the pretty, subtle, floral print appealed. Here, I have paired it with jeans.

It’s got an elasticated waist which makes it super comfortable, too. I quite like wearing short dresses as tops, as you can see in another post……here.

My second floral item is from “Laura Ashley”, the fashion and homeware retailer. I have lots of nostalgia for this brand as I shopped there from my late teens, through to building a home then onto maternity wear, and onwards. I loved to have a good old browse around this shop.

I bought this dress in November 2019 and, at that time, I wrote a blog post about their “Pimlico” range. My post is entitled “Nostalgia – A Tale of Three Dresses”.

Then, in March 2020, the company, unfortunately, filed for administration. I was so sad to see this iconic brand close its doors. Click here if you fancy a read.

My third item is a dress from Warehouse UK, which I bought over two years ago.  You can see how I styled it for summer …..here.   I have styled my dress with my new cream lace-up boots which I have just managed to buy in the Marks and Spencers sale.  They are so super comfortable.  here’s a closer look.

Shop the look.  Here are a few floral dresses and boots you may like.

I started to write this post a few weeks ago. I’m finding it tricky to know what to say during this time of international crisis – other than my thoughts and prayers are with the people of Ukraine and everyone who is involved in this war through no fault of their own.

All we can do is to keep going and supporting them all we can.

  6. Ah, the classic “Florals… For Spring? Groundbreaking.” It’s a quote that has become somewhat of a humorous cliché in the fashion world. The line comes from the movie “The Devil Wears Prada,” where the character Miranda Priestly, played by Meryl Streep,
